SLO Motion

Activating Circularity through Local Materials

City of Dreams Pavilion Competition 2017
Governors Island, New York, NY
Designed in collaboration with Brandon Pietras

With design principles inspired by the SLO Foods movement (seasonal, local, organic), SLO Motion proposes a temporal and contextually-responsive approach to architecture and materiality.  All materials are foraged, sourced, and (bio)fabricated from waste streams of Governors Island, eliminating potential loads on transport and disposal.

Design was also driven by needs of local organizations. Through reverse engineering a circular economy to fulfill these local needs, we allowed second-life and end-of-use programs to inform the initial material specifications of the pavilion.

An Expression of Local Material Ecologies Organic elements that make up the biopolymer canopy panels and gabion basket footings are expressed in the finished structure, making the pavilion itself a reflection of the local material ecologies.

Stimulating a Circular Economy

Circular Materials Economy
Materials are not only sourced from waste streams but have end-of-life benefits that bring value to the island after the pavilion’s disassembly
